West Churchman's work, to which van Gigch gives ample credit. Professor van Gigch refers often to Churchman as he explores the relationship between the philosophy of management science and the philosophy of systems science.

Metadecisions

This book focuses on the rehabilitation, clarification and application of the relationships between epistemology, philosophy of science and, ultimately, the philosophy of systems. The main problem of epistemology-the theory of knowledge, the branch of philosophy inquiring into the nature and the possibility of knowledge--is its relationship with cognitive science.

The main problem resides in studying not only the problem of knowing when science studies itself , but also the real processes of knowing cognitive functions. Philosophy of science is concerned with four different areas of inquiry: to identify and clarify a the common not disciplinary structural concepts of scientific inquiry Popper's falsification paradigm can be understood in this area ; b the different scientific disciplines; c the relationship between theory and experience; and d how scientific theories may be intended descriptions of nature versus intellectual, effective representations.

We consider epistemology an output of the philosophy of science. Which of the two, the philosophy of science or its output--epistemology-is more abstract?

Contemporary Systems Thinking

It is difficult to say. The answer to this question is a matter of semantics. Dealing with epistemology provides more freedom and more responsibility. This is what the hierarchy of inquiring of systems designed by Professor van Gigch implies. Van Gigch draws up a philosophy of systems and expresses philosophical rules that can be used in any systems inquiry. Search for more papers by this author.
